Chittenden, Vermont

By region the biggest town in the state, Chittenden was titled after Thomas Chittenden, one of the Green Mountain Boys and governor of both the autonomous Vermont Republic, and later, the state of Vermont.

Chittenden and his son Noah were among the town's principal territory grantees, although the governor may have never attended the area.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 74.2 square miles (192.2 km2), of which 73.0 square miles (189.1 km2) is territory and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2 or 1.62%) is water.

It is the biggest town by region in Vermont, slightly larger than Stowe in Lamoille County.

The town is divided in two by a ridge of the Green Mountains, and only the half of the town is settled.

At the 2000 census, there were 1,182 citizens , 451 homeholds and 345 families living in the town.

There were 451 homeholds of which 37.3% had kids under the age of 18 residing with them, 64.1% were married couples residing together, 7.3% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 23.5% were non-families.

26.3% of the populace were under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 30.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median homehold income was $45,313 and the median family income was $52,596.

About 2.9% of families and 6.2% of the populace were below the poverty line, including 6.1% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
