The populace was 546 at the 2010 census. It is site of the annual Pittsfield Snowshoe Race.

Pittsfield was titled after Pittsfield, Massachusetts, which itself had been titled in honor of William Pitt.

The town proved suitable for grazing livestock because of its mountainous terrain.
